CECAFA U20: Kenya remains top in Group B despite Tanzania draw

The Kenyan U20 men’s football team drew 2-2 with their counterparts from Tanzania in the two nations’ second fixture of the ongoing CECAFA U20 tournament played on Tuesday 24 September in Jinja Uganda.

After winning their opening Group B matches by huge margins, both teams were unable to be separated by the final whistle at the FUFA Technical Centre grounds and share the spoils courtesy of goals in each half from Austin Otieno, Andrew Simchimba, Patrick Otieno and Abdul Hamisi Suleiman.

The Raising Stars, who defeated Zanzibar 5-0 in their opening match, were unable to replicate that fete and twice let go of their lead in the game.

Austin Otieno of AFC Leopards broke the deadlock in the 26th minute but Tanzania would pull level 10 minutes later through Simchimba, who now has four goals to his name after netting a hatrick on the opening day and ties Sydney Lokale at the top of the scorers charts.

Lokale netted four in the win over Zanzibar.

Stanley Okumbi’s charges would again take the lead eight minutes after the restart through Kariobangi Sharks’ Patrick Otieno, but this lead would be short lived as just three minutes later, Tanzania, who demolished Ethiopia 4-0 on matchday 1, would restore parity through Suleiman.

The result now leaves the two teams tied at the top of Group B with four points, separated by goal difference with Kenya taking leadership of the group.

The two nations will conclude their group stage action on Thursday with Kenya going up against Ethiopia and Tanzania against Zanzibar.

The top three teams in the group will qualify for the knockout stage.
