Ugandan champions KCCA have had their hopes of making it to the group stages proper of the CAF Champions League ended after they were held to a 1-1 draw at home in Kampala by Angolan side Petro Luanda in the two sides’ return-leg fixture of the final preliminary round, played on Friday 27 September.
The result sees Petro progress to the group stages thanks to the away goals rule after the first-leg tie in Luanda ended 0-0.
The Angolan side are now guaranteed at least USD 550, 000 (Kshs 55m) for their participation in the group stages while KCCA are demoted down to the CAF Confederation Cup where they will contest the play-offs for a chance to make it to the group stages.
There are two more games set to be contested later on Friday and a further 13 over the weekend with Kenyan champions Gor Mahia among those who will be in action.
Gor will play host to Algerian side USM Alger at the MISC Kasarani on Sunday looking to overturn a 4-1 first-leg loss and make it to the group stages for the first time in the club’s history.
