KPL Goals: Namanda, Makwatta, Wanga on fine form in Week 4

20 goals were recorded in seven matches in week 4 of the 2019-20 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) season, a one-goal drop from week 3 that had two more matches as both Bandari and Gor Mahia were busy in the continent. This is, however, a huge rise from the seven that were scored in week two- another week that had the two giants missing in action due to continental engagements.

Five players who were on target over the weekend were also on the mark in Week three. Elli Asieche, John Mark Makwatta, Daniel Waweru, Allan Wanga and Luke Namanda all continued in their fine form with Wanga and Asieche the only ones to end up on the losing side in Week 4 despite scoring.

Round 4 began on Saturday 28th, former champions Tusker and Sofapaka clashing from 3 pm and gifting fans a massive four goals combined. The skipper of the day Michael Madoya opened the scoring proceedings for the brewers, one doubled by defender Hillary Wandera. Luke Namanda– on very fine form for Tusker, hit number three in the clash. Elli Asieche’s late penalty would prove just a consolation for Sofapaka.

In Kisumu, a derby was played out- with three goals scored. Hassan Kikoyo had scored the opener for Western Stima against hosts on the day Kisumu All Stars. The former National Super League side, however, rallied to even the scores before half time through Michael Owino. Defender Vitalis Akumu , in an unchecked run from his left-back position, made an incredible run at the hour mark to score a goal that bewildered even his own teammates as Stima ran out 2-1 winners.

No goal was scored at Sharks-Mathare United affair.

Ulinzi Stars played the other tie of Saturday- at home to a tricky SoNy Sugar side. the Sugar millers had in fact gone into the lead through John Mwita in the first half. The soldiers staged a late comeback in the tie, however, scoring three goals between the 71st minute and the referee’s final whistle. Daniel Waweru struck from a free-kick after which youngster Moses Mwangi and Enosh Ochieng ensured a safe victory.

The final three matches were played on Sunday- AFC Leopards recording a 4-0 mauling of Chemelil Sugar FC who get an identical wallop in under a week.

A John Mark Makwatta brace sandwiched between Soter Kayumba and Tresor Ndikumana’s goals aided Cassa Mbungo’s men to their second successive win. Makwatta goes to three goals in three appearances.

Allan Wanga had done well to send Nicholas Muyoti’s Kakamega Homeboyz into the lead under ten minutes against Kenya Commercial Bank FC, but slackness led to a comeback by the bankers who equalized through Dennis Odhiambo and won the tie through Kennedy Owino. All goals came in the first half.

Wazito FC were out in Kericho, still in search of a first win of the season and this they got at a venue that has always brought kind returns as regards scoring goals. A 2-0 win against a hard-fighting Zoo FC is Wazito’s first this season and it comes through Victor Ndinya and Rupia Elvis.
