The 2019 Golden Boy award shortlist has been revealed with the most standout football player for the past year that is below the age of 21 years expected to be announced at a ceremony in Italy on December 16.
Barcelona wonderkid Ansu Fati, is the youngest player on the shortlist at age 16. The winger who was born in Guinea-Bissau in 2002, is having a breakout 2019-20 season for the Catalan side and has already achieved the fete of being the youngest ever goal scorer for the five time European champions.
Juventus defender Matthijs De Ligt, who is the reigning champion having won the award in 2018, has also made the shortlist as has Arsenal’s Matteo Guendouzi, Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho and Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior.
The Dutch defender is looking to be the first player in history to win the award twice.
Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix has also made the 20-man list that has been chopped down from a provisional 40.
The Golden Boy award has been handed out since 2003 with former Dutch international Rafael van der Vaart the inaugural award winner.
Some of the players to have won the award in the past include, Paul Pogba, Sergio Aguero, Wayne Rooney, Mario Balotelli and Kylian Mbappe.
