Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia played to a 1 – 1 draw with Congolese side DC Motema Pembe in their CAF Confederations Cup playoff clash at Moi International Sports Center (MISC) Kasarani on Sunday 27 October.
Gor Mahia’s Ivorian forward Gislain Yikpe opened the scoring in the 66th minute, just shortly after his introduction to the game, taking advantage of a toe-poked pass from Nicholas Kipkirui.
The lead however did not last long, as the visitors hit back in the 70th minute. Gor Mahia keeper David Mapigano did well to go low to block a free kick delivery but his defenders were slow to react and William Likuta took advantage, slamming home the spills.
With the equalizer, Motema Pembe picked momentum and should have added a second in the 77th minute, only for Likuta’s header to hit the bar with Mapigano well beaten.
Momanyi sent off
Ivan Bongonga was on hand to hit the rebound but Gor Mahia defender Charles Momanyi blocked the goal bound effort with an outstretched arm. He was sent off right away and the visitors handed a penalty.
Bongonga took on the responsibility from the spot and he chose Mapigano’s left. The keeper read well the effort and saved well, punching to his left before racing to smother the effort.
In the 79th minute, Joash Onyango had to make a goal line clearance as Motema Pembe went on the prowl again and head coach Steven Polack had to introduce defender Joachim Oluoch for Dickson Ambundo to check the growing threat.
Gor Mahia will now hope to pick a win or a scoring draw of more than one goal when they tour Kinshasa for the return leg set for November 3 as they hope to advance to the group stages for the third straight year.
