AFC Leopards striker John Mark Makwatta has become the first player this season to receive the SJAK monthly award after being named the Kenyan Premier League’s (KPL) best player for the months of August and September.
Makwatta, who is in his debut season at The Den, beat off stiff competition from fellow Leopards teammate in custodian Benjamin Ochan and Gor Mahia skipper Kenneth Muguna to the gong which also comes with a Kshs. 100,000 cash prize as well as an LG high-end television set.
The former Ulinzi Stars forward returned to the local scene at the start of the current season after spending the last three years abroad, specifically in Zambia and Kuwait, and has so far netted five times in the league to lead the scorer’s chart.
His goals have lifted Leopards up to second on the KPL log with 14 points, just a point adrift of leaders Gor. Leopards will next face off against Ulinzi in round 8 on Saturday with the award expected to be extra motivation for Makwatta against his former employers.
