Mathare United head coach Salim Ali believes Sunday’s opponents Sony Sugar are no pushovers despite them languishing in the relegation zone and has called on his charges not to underestimate the Millers.
The two teams are set to faceoff in round 9 of the KPL in Awendo from 12PM with both sides aiming for the win so as to boost their options on either side of the standings.
Mathare, who are still unbeaten in this campaign, can leap up to joint top of the log with 17 points if they win and other results go their way while Sony can close the gap between them and safety and tie Kariobangi Sharks in 15th place.
And in light of that, Salim knows all too well the damage that can be brought by a sluggish showing against Sony.
“Even though they are in the relegation zone, Sony are no pushovers and are a team that can punish you with ease,” the former Ulinzi Stars tactician is quoted as saying on the clubs official portal. “My players know not to underestimate any opponent but if they do then they will have to learn the hard way.”
Mathare had a huge boost on Wednesday when they defeated defending league champions Gor Mahia by a solitary goal and a win on Sunday can register their first back to back wins for the season.
“Sony have shown that they are a side who can create chances and bury them and any team that can do that has the potential to win a match on any given day. So we have to be cautious especially now we are playing away. But I know my charges are locked in and ready with the win against Gor giving them renewed confidence,” he said.
Sony have had a start to the season to forget with financial constraints forcing them to grant two walkovers already to AFC Leopards and Tusker.
