SoNy Sugar FC will no longer be part of the top flight Kenyan Premier League (KPL) after being expelled by the league manager for issuing their third walkover in the 2019-20 season.
The Sugar millers, making their way to Kericho to play Zoo FC on Saturday, could not get to the Green Stadium on time and arrived barely minutes after the issuance of three points to the hosts by the match officials.
In a communique sent out today, the league manager confirms the 2006 champions’ exit from the league.
”Following the review of the Referee’s and Match Commissioner’s report of the KPL 2019/20 match NO 090 between ZOO FC and Sony Sugar FC which was rescheduled to be played on Wednesday, November, 20th, 2019 at the Kericho Green Stadium, Kick-Off 3:00 PM, it was noted that the away club, Sony Sugar FC failed to honor the match,” KPL say.
This brings to an end the club’s 26-year stay in Kenya’s top flight- a season marred by financial challenges that even saw them dish out a walkover at their own backyard. As a result, the KPL reveals that all results against SoNy Sugar have been cancelled.
”… per the KPL policy on failure or refusal to honor matches, and also per articles 4.1.12 and 4.1.13 of the 2019 FKF Rules and Regulations, Sony Sugar FC have been expelled from the Kenyan Premier League and all its results have been nullified.” reads a part of the communique.
Hugely affected by the expulsion will be such clubs as Wazito- who drop from 13th to 15th, Ulinzi Stars – 2nd to 4th. Posta Rangers meanwhile, are the biggest risers in the log as they now occupy the second position up from 5th.
