Shikangwa double hands Kenya maiden CECAFA title

Kenya are the 2019 CECAFA region Women’s champions thanks to a convincing 2-0 win over hosts Tanzania in the tournament’s final match-up played on Monday 25 November at the Azam Sports Complex in Chamazi Tanzania.

Young forward Gentrix Shikangwa came off the bench to score both goals and hand Kenya its first regional title in the Women’s game.

The Wiyeta Girls striker was introduced in the 50th minute after Janet Bundi was withdrawn with injury and like she has done throughout the tournament, Shikangwa produced the goods and showed why she is coach David Ouma’s secret weapon.

She grabbed the opener in the 70th minute through the spot after Tanzania defender Donisa Minja had handled a cross that Shikangwa herself had delivered.

Second goal

The second goal that came with only three minutes remaining on the clock was an absolute beauty. Shikangwa struck the ball with her favoured left foot from outside the area with the shot wrong footing Najat Idrisa in the Tanzania goal and leaving her with an injury as she attempted to keep the ball from going in.

Shikangwa now finishes the tournament as the top scorer with 10 goals with the bulk of them (4) scored in Kenya’s 12-0 walloping of Djibouti in the group stages.
