Copa Coca-Cola: Kenya’s title defence crumbles at Tanzania’s feet

Kenya’s bid to successfully defend the Africa U16 Copa Coca Cola title was crushed by Tanzania on Wednesday 4 December after a 4-5 loss on post-match penalties following a 0-0 draw in regular time in the semi final clash staged at the Mpesa Foundation Academy in Thika.

Kenya, who started the tournament on a wrong footing, managed to hold their own against a Tanzania side billed favorites from the opening minute and braved it all to push the game to the lottery aimed at breaking the tie – the post match kicks.

Bronze to fight for

While Hamisi Hamisi, Fredrick Onyango, Marcos Odhiambo and Mwinyi Nassoro ticked the right boxes, Mohammed Mabruk and Kibwana Bilal missed their kicks, ending it all painfully for Kenya, represented by Serani Boys High School.

The result left Kenya with just the bronze medal to fight for, and they will be up against Zambia who also fell on post match penalties, 4-3 at the hands of Zimbabwe, after a 2-2 draw in regular time. Zimbabwe got their goals through Gumbe Dylan and Uraya Ronald while Zambia got their goals through Innocent Nkoma and Joram Sakaza.

As Kenya and Zambia battle for the third place spoils, Zimbabwe who are unbeaten in the competition, will be taking on Tanzania, who earlier in the competition lost 0-2 to Zambia.
