Kenya book CECAFA semis slot with comeback victory over Sudan

Two goals in the second half from Hassan Abdallah and Oscar Wamalwa saw Harambee Stars comeback from a goal down and win 2-1 against Sudan on matchday 2 of the ongoing CECAFA Senior Challenge in Kampala, Uganda on Tuesday 10 December.

Kenya were trailing at halftime to Muhammad Namir’s 30th minute strike and were boosted in the second half by the introduction of Abdallah whose header pulled Kenya level in the 65th minute; the goal being his second of the tournament after grabbing the winner against Tanzania on matchday 1.

Wamalwa, who assisted Abdallah’s goal in the TZ game, sealed the win with a close range tap in with quarter of an hour left to play at the Lugongo Stadium; the goal being the Ulinzi Stars’ man first for Kenya in just his second appearance.

Stars now qualify to the semi-finals with a game to spare and lead Group B with six points.

The game also saw assistant coach Zedekiah Zico Otieno stand in for suspended head coach Francis Kimanzi.

Sudan, who have one point earned from their opening day draw against Zanzibar, will have to win their final group game against Tanzania if they are to qualify from the group.

Tanzania and Zanzibar play each other later today at the same venue.
