Thiongo scores late to deny Ulinzi at Afraha

Kakamega Homeboyz forward Peter Thiong’o saved his side from the jaws of defeat with a late goal that saw his side pick a point in a 2-2 draw in a Match Day 14 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) clash at the Afraha Stadium on Sunday 15 December.

Steven Wakhanya opened the scoring for Homeboyz but Enosh Ochieng, scoring his third goal in as many days leveled matters to see the clash head to the break in a tie. John Kago put Ulinzi in the lead just five minutes after the restart but Thiongo spun the game on its head in the 90th minute to break Ulinzi Stars hearts.

Slow opening

Ulinzi’s graph was more of flat in the opening stages of the game, uncharacteristic of the Soldiers and for allowing Homeboyz to take the game to their turf, they were punished when Steven Wakhanya rose to flick home a corner in the 21st minute.

That lead would however, last just 10 minutes before Elvis Nandwa started a fine move for Ulinzi Stars, getting the ball to Daniel Waweru whose slide rule pass to an already pacing Enosh Ochieng caught Homeboyz defenders off guard.

Gabriel Andika raced off his line to try and salvage the situation but by then Enosh had already picked his spot and slid the ball past him. Not even the best effort from George Odiwuor could keep the ball from the net.

Kago’s goal

At the start of the second half, Ulinzi showed more hunger and Enosh dropped deep in the 50th minute to collect a poor cross from Peter Thiongo and start a speedy break, picking out Nandwa, who spotted John Kago’s run on the right.

Kago did well to beat Okiring and with Andika expecting that the midfielder would cross the ball back to Enosh, Kago opted to squeeze it past his near post for Ulinzi’s second goal.

Substitute John Njuguna had the chance to kill off the game when he picked the ball after a mistake from Andika but his low shot flashed across the face of goal.

Thiongo leveler

On the other end, Thiongo twice forced great saves from Jacktone Odhiambo before finally beating him after meeting a floated ball from Noah Wafula with a diving header when Ulinzi Stars defence somehow went missing in the 90th minute.

The shared spoils left Ulinzi Stars at position six with 22 points from 13 matches while Homeboyz stayed third with 27 points from 14 matches.

In the other matches played on the day, AFC Leopards played to a barren draw with Tusker at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos while Western Stima picked three points away to Nzoia Sugar at Sudi Stadium in a 2-1 win. Kariobangi Sharks were once again denied three points, in a 3-3 draw with Posta Rangers at Kasarani as KCB trounced Wazito FC 2-1 in Machakos.
