We are in round 15 of the 2019-20 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) season, goals are coming in thick and fast and no one wants to go home without finding the back of the net- even when they’re losing.
19 goals were scored in the round that spun between the weekend of Saturday 14th December and Sunday 15th. Action involving Kariobangi Sharks FC once again produced a goal-fest, and leadership at the top of the scorers’ chart is almost changing hands.
We begin by looking at Bandari’s Saturday visit to Kisumu where- after being dispatched by Kakamega Homeboyz in the midweek, unleashed their fury on Kisumu All Stars, whipping the Lakeside boys by two goals to nothing. Yema Mwana and Shaban Kenga were on target for the coastal side.
Wazito FC were hosted in an early kick-off Sunday clash by Kenya Commercial Bank and found the going tough against the bankers– falling 2-1. Despite taking the lead through Lloyd Wahome, the visitors were caught napping at the back and Enock Agwanda fired in the equalizer from the spot before Simon Abuko earned KCB the full set of three points. The goal takes Agwanda to the top of the scorers’ chart with 7- level with Tusker’s Timothy Otieno.
Six goals were scored when Sharks played Posta Rangers, and two braces recorded. James Mazembe, striking twice-aided by Sydney Lokale’s single- had given Sharks a 3-2 lead which they carried into injury time. Rangers had scored through Francis Nambute and George Bill Oporia. It was Nambute who would sink Sharks’ hearts with a stoppage-time equalizer for 3-3, himself taking his goal tally to 5 for the season.
Sudi Stadium produced 4 goals, and a youngster’s fairy tale rise continued. Western Stima had visited the sugar millers and took a 2-0 half time lead through 17-year-old Benson Omalla Ochieng who now goes to six goals for the season. Nzoia did manage a goal back when Collins Wakhungu– inactive in the charts from the previous rounds, pulled one back but Stima once again struck through Oromcan Villa for a 3-1 full-time score.
The final goals of this round come from Afraha Stadium where Kakamega Homeboyz took issues with Ulinzi Stars. The visitors- Homeboyz, did score twice but had to wait for late magic from youngster Peter Thiong’o to even out the scores for 2-2. Stephen Wakhanya had sent Homeboyz into the lead which Enosh Ochieng canceled. John Kago then helped wrestle the lead from the visitors when he struck for 2-1.
Thiong’o, scoring his 6th of the season, helped grab a crucial point for Homeboyz in the title chase.
There was no separating Tusker and AFC Leopards as they chose not to score a goal.
Agwanda goes joint top on 7 goals with Tusker’s Timothy Otieno who is out with the national team for the 2019 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup. Following the two is a youthful duo of Peter Thiong’o (Homeboyz) and Benson Omalla (Stima) on 6 goals each. John Mark Makwatta (Leopards), Elvis Rupia (Wazito), Elli Asieche (Sofa), Collins Wakhungu (Nzoia), Luke Namanda (Tusker), Francis Nambute (Posta) and Enosh Ochieng (Ulinzi) are all on 5 goals.
