Gaspo Women ready to take on new WPL season

Gaspo Women kicked off preparations on Wednesday 8 January at the State House training grounds in preparation for the 2020 Kenya Women Premier League (KWPL) campaign, which is scheduled to kick off on Saturday 22 February.

After finishing second in 2019, the team is well pumped up for the 2020 season and seeks to go one better. Speaking to Soka, head coach Issac Maluki elaborated that their focus will be trained on winning the league title.

While he is confident in his charges’ strengths, Maluki predicted that the coming season isn’t going to be easy since teams are making big moves in strengthening for the new campaign.

“We finished fifth in 2018, then second in 2019 but in 2020 we are not aiming for any other position but first place,” he told Soka.

There has been a standard rise in quality among teams in the WPL in the past season, a marker of good potential among the teams, and Maluki is not taking any team lightly.

“No team can be underestimated, considering each one of them is signing new players and preparing in their own way. Going to the season, we will not underrate any team, rather, we’ll focus on our preps.”

Gaspo players were key in the Kenya national women’s team, Harambee Starlets, at the 2019 CECAFA Senior Women Championship, where Kenya, emerged champions. Maluki draws a lot of inspiration and hope for the future from their participation and contribution in the regional tournament.

“We had some of our players in the CECAFA team and that showed that the team has numerous rising stars as well as secondary school players, which is great, since we get the chance to nurture the young ones and showcase their talents,” he noted.

Custodian Vivian Akinyi echoed her coach’s remarks, stating that Gaspo is heading to the new season with a defined ambition – to be champions.

“My only aim in this year’s league is going for the title. As a team that’s what we have set our minds on and I’m ready to lead the course as we go for our targets,” she said.

Vihiga Queens are the reigning KWPL champions. Nakuru West Queens, Kahawa Queens and SEP Oyugis are the newly promoted sides that will be joining the league.
