KWPL: Maluki eyes good start in Kiambu Derby

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has released the fixtures ahead of the 2020 Kenya Women Premier League (WPL) season which will start on Saturday 22 February. On the opening weekend, Gaspo FC will welcome Thika Queens in a Kiambu derby at Ruiru Stadium, a match that is expected to stir emotions across the two sides’ fans.

Ahead of the match Gaspo coach Issac Maluki is predicting an unforgettable 90 minutes of entertainment.

Last season

Gaspo finished second last season, with 70 points, four more than Thika but the rivalry was marked by Thika Queens forcing Gaspo to a 2-2 which left a massive dent in Gaspo’s charge.

“We are excited that the league is about to get back and we are very ready and doing what we can to see where the year will take us. The Thika game is always good for Kiambu County and we can’t wait to play the derby,” he told Soka

Key players

Both teams will be without key players as the new season kicks off with Gaspo’s Vivian Corazone Aquino set to seal a one-year deal with Portuguese side Atletico Auriense while Thika’s top scorer Mwanahalima Adam leaves for Sweden to attend trials at Stockholm based Djugardens IF.

Maluki is sure going to miss Corazone’s contribution to the team, but he is happy to see her open a new chapter in her career.

“I have being in constant talks with Corazone since the transfer details broke out and as we all know what drives her. She loves what she does and has a great time doing what she does and thus the success.

“I reminded her that success is not final and she has to have the courage to continue and that will count”, he noted.

Registration

The registration window for clubs participating in the 2020 KWPL is scheduled to close on Friday 14 February and as Maluki works on his list for the season, he called on fans to be patient as the club works towards unveiling of players.

“Concerning our transfer details, it will be officially done and communicated through a press statement,” he concluded.
