Tusker FC rose to second place in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) standings after a 1-0 win over AFC Leopards in the last match of the weekend’s Round 20 action, staged at Afraha Stadium on Sunday 9 February.
Timothy Otieno’s 62nd minute goal was all the Brewers needed but Leopards will blame themselves for not drawing first blood earlier in the game, after new signing Elvis Rupia missed a 45th minute penalty.
The win takes Tusker to just three points behind league leaders Gor Mahia, who lost 1-3 to Sofapaka in Narok, with both Gor Mahia and Tusker having played 19 matches.
In the earlier weekend matches, KCB ceded some ground in the race for the title after falling 0-1 to Kariobangi Sharks on Friday 7 February while Ulinzi Stars also saw two points knocked off their quest for the title after playing to a 1-1 draw with Nzoia Sugar at Sudi Stadium on Saturday. Kakamega Homeboyz also had a setback after playing to a one-all draw with Bandari in Mombasa on Saturday.
Lower in the table
In the lower reaches of the league standings, Chemelil Sugar rose from bottom with a shock 2-1 win over Posta Rangers in Muhoroni on Saturday as Wazito FC posted just their third win of the season, beating Western Stima in Narok on the same day.
In the only match staged in Nairobi, Zoo FC succumbed to a 1-3 loss at the hands of Mathare United, leaving the Kericho side without a win in eight straight matches.
