Nyangweso stays optimistic of a change

The 2020/21 BetKing Premier League (BKPL) season has come with mixed fortunes for Ulinzi Stars. On average, it hasn’t been a good season, at least after their opening seven matches, but head coach Benjamin Nyangweso remains confident that things will change.

Seven matches in, the team has managed just one win – the 2-0 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz on Wednesday 23 December. More recently, the team drew 1-1 with Nairobi City Stars in what went down as another unwelcome result.

While it presented a shift from their lack of goals in earlier matches, the coach rued the fact that they couldn’t bag three points from it. The coach assures of continued focus on his team’s attack, crossing fingers on better days ahead.

A bit disappointing

“We played well, like we always do. This time we managed to score but still it ended in a draw. It is a bit disappointing but we are still going to give our all when we step out there on the pitch. We are still a work in progress and we will not give up; we will keep training and working hard on the attack,” he said.

As he named the squad for the City Stars game, the coach broke up the team that had largely featured in the opening six matches, and especially in midfield. He clearly wanted an injection of pace in midfield and precision in attack. That came with Oscar Wamalwa’s penalty goal after 30 minutes but that would be all in terms of goals.

“In the City Stars game, we made changes but still, unfortunately, we couldn’t get three points. I will still give the players a pat on the back for their performance because we managed to create good chances,” he added.

Towards the transfer window

With the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) signaling for the midseason transfer window starting 25th January, Nyangweso is among the coaches who will be looking around. His priority is in attack, and he hopes he can find the perfect player for his team.

“We will try and get players to boost our attack in the transfer window. We have looked at some, and we are still looking but then the dynamics of the transfer window mean sometimes you can’t get the players you want,” he concluded.

Next up for Ulinzi Stars is a game against Posta Rangers on Saturday 23 January, at Kasarani.
