FKF Betway Cup: KPL clubs made to sweat in round of 32

Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia FC on Sunday 16th, had to come from behind to dispatch a stubborn Naivas side in the two teams’ round of 32 clashes of the FKF Betway Cup that was staged at the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani.

Naivas, plying their trade in the country’s 3rd tier- the FKF Division One, went into the lead through Kingsley Owuor in the 12th minute but Dickson Ambundo leveled the scores in the 40th minute. Not to be cowed out of the tie, the underdogs reclaimed their lead just a minute after Ambundo’s equalizer and had Hassan Rashid to thank for this.

The KPL giants had to a bigger second half if they were to ward off Naivas and duly canceled the underdogs’ lead once more with Lawrence Juma this time on the mark. Everything then pointed towards a draw but Boniface Omondi happened in stoppage time to steal the match from Naivas.

At the Mumias Sports Complex, Div Two side Luanda Villa made another premiership outfit Ulinzi Stars sweat for a break into the round of 16 after a 1-1 draw in regulation time. A total of 17 penalties had to be taken before the soldiers could get the all-clear to sail through.

AFC Leopards were narrow 1-0 winners over Elim FC in Kitale while Kenya Commercial Bank was another top side held in regulation time and could only win through penalties against Zoo Youth.

In matches played on Saturday, three top-flight sides were held to draws and only got to sail through on penalties. Kisumu All Stars were in a 0-0 draw with Nyabururu Sportiff, a similar scoreline recorded when Balaji EPZ played Sofapaka. Tandaza did manage a goal against Posta Rangers as they held the mailmen to a 1-1 draw but failed in the shoot-outs.
