Harambee Stars striker Michael Olunga’s fine run continued when he netted in the 35th minute as his club Al Duhail beat Al Shorta of Iraq 2-0 in the opening match of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League on Thursday 15 April.
The tournament is being played at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Olunga’s powerful shot was too much for Hassan Kadhim who deflected it into his own net for the opener.
Enjoying a 1-0 advantage at half time, the Qatari side came back stronger in the second half and was 2-0 up just seven minutes after resumption. This time Brazillian Edmilson Junior’s volley found the back of the net to ensure his side picked all three points on offer. Al Duhail will meet Saudi Arabia side Al Ahli Saudi in their next match on Sunday.
Al Duhail will be hoping to go past the group stages from where they were eliminated last year.
